Nestled within a dense canopy of mature trees along the undulating terrain of Kanakapura Road, Blr Brewing Co. is conceived as a hospitality landscape shaped by its existing ecology and topography. Mature trees, natural level changes and a disused paintball facility established the framework for the intervention, determining where architecture could be inserted and where the landscape would remain undisturbed. Rather than imposing a singular built form, the project unfolds as a sequence of terraces, decks, water courts and gathering spaces woven through the woodland setting. Movement through the site becomes a gradual journey of discovery, with shifting views, changing levels and layered experiences revealed incrementally beneath the tree canopy.
The site's pronounced topography became the primary generator of the planning strategy. Existing contours were retained and used to organise the programme across multiple levels, eliminating the need for extensive excavation or regrading. Dining areas are arranged as stepped terraces nestled into the natural slope, each establishing a distinct relationship with the surrounding landscape while minimising intervention into the terrain. Changes in level naturally create a hierarchy of intimate and communal spaces, allowing the site to unfold as a layered sequence of experiences.
At the heart of the project, a network of interconnected water courts occupies the site's natural low points. Shaped by the contours and woven between existing trees, these water bodies function as both environmental and social devices. Their presence contributes to evaporative cooling while introducing reflection, movement and sound into the landscape. Seating terraces descend towards the water's edge, transforming the terrain into informal gathering spaces where architecture, climate and topography converge.
The mature tree canopy informed every aspect of the design. Existing trees became the primary reference points around which spaces were organised. Decks wrap around trunks, walkways thread carefully between root systems, and openings within slabs and roofs accommodate continued growth. In many areas, trees rise directly through the architecture, dissolving conventional boundaries between built form and landscape and reinforcing the experience of dining within a cultivated urban forest.
A lightweight structural language supports this relationship between architecture and site. Slender steel columns and beams establish a rhythmic framework that accommodates large spans while maintaining visual permeability. Elevated platforms negotiate existing root systems and changing levels, allowing movement through the landscape with minimal ecological impact
The principal indoor dining space emerged through the adaptive reuse of an abandoned paintball facility. The existing shell was retained and transformed through selective intervention. Walls were removed to strengthen visual and physical connections with the landscape, while a new mezzanine level was inserted within the double-height volume to increase capacity and create additional vantage points. Large arched openings frame views of the surrounding canopy, bringing daylight deep into the interior and softening the industrial character of the original structure.
The material palette draws from the site's existing character and resources. Locally sourced granite, exposed concrete, steel and reclaimed timber establish a restrained architectural language rooted in the landscape. Existing railings salvaged from the paintball facility were repurposed as grilles for the new arched windows, extending the project's approach to adaptation and reuse through its smallest details.
Blr Brewing Co. ultimately derives its identity from the site itself. Through a careful process of preservation, adaptive reuse and precise insertion, the project transforms a wooded terrain into a layered hospitality environment where landscape, architecture and climate remain inseparable.
Whattay Kitchen and Brew, Kanakapura Road, Bangalore is a dining experience nestled in nature... a space whose definitions are shaped from the learning’s of the existing natural habitat at the site.
Planning:It is spread across 28000 sft interspersed with landscape and builtspaces accommodating 600 seats. A mix of spatial and seating experiences by a 2000 sftwaterbody emulates the experience of seating by a stream or a natural pond. Water becomes the lifeline of the space and binds the many spaces in thesite. The design is a response to the existing topologywith the bigger contours converted to stepped seating placed adjacent to the water. An existing double height Paint Ball Shed was reused and recycled to an indoor dining area with mezzanine spaces. The space is designed to be a pause to the excesses of urban life in a city struggling with the imperfections of its progress.
